What's the origin of the name Frank? / Where does the name Frank come from? Originally, it is a male epithet with the meaning "from the family of the Francs". Frank-like (fraenkisch) is a synonym for free, which is related to the Francs historical importance as conqueror and Gentlemen. After invading France and establishing their new empire there, their reputation of being free was set / won. Their clan name also defined them as bold, impertinent, courageous and hard-working. Only in the 18th century, Frank became widely known as a first name, probably through the influence of Englishmen and was later on carried among other countries to Germany. Frank in the meaning of free / open probably originated around 1500 from the French word franc or the Latin francus. Other interpretations / related words / modifications are Franklin (English), Franko (Spanish) and Franco (Italian). 

The Franks were in their empire free persons and thus, Frank obtained the meaning "the free".

Dieses Buch will, wie der Name schon sagt, Wege nach und durch West - und Ostpreußen weisen. Was an diesen Wegen lag oder immer noch liegt, wird in etwa 500 alphabetisch geordneten Stichworten vorgestellt. Der Leser wird mit der prussischen Vergangenheit wie mit der Geschichte Preußens und des Fürstenbistums Ermland bekannt gemacht, er erfährt Wesentliches über die Gründung der Städte und Dörfer wie deren Entwicklung, über die großen Persönlichkeiten, die aus ihnen hervorgingen. Er lernt die Schönheit des Landes kennen, nicht zuletzt durch die reichen Illustrationen, aus früheren Zeiten und auch von Künstlerhand neu geschaffen.

Diese Buch hat mir sehr geholfen Preußen kennenzulernen. Informationen über die Dörfer zu bekommen, in denen meine Vorfahren gelebt haben. Hilfreich ist auch, daß neben dem deutschen Namen des Dorfes auch der heutige Polnische angegeben ist. Desgleichen konnte ich diese den zuständigen Kreisen zuordnen.
